New
digital capabilities come on stream
Increased
investment in digital printing facilities at Printwise is
starting to prove its worth. In February we purchased a brand
new Xerox digital press and the benefits of this for our clients
is clear.
The
new Xerox DocuColor 5000 was chosen for its superior image
quality, with print capabilities approaching lithographic
standards. Unlike lithographic printing however, print runs
can be short, allowing Printwise to move one step closer to
being able to 'print on demand'.
"The
new press complements prior investments in new binding equipment
for our digital printing division", said Printwise Managing
Director Paul McGerty. The new press and binder combined means
we can meet demand for low-run, high quality book work - a
key area of growth for us."

Peter
Snow visits Haverhill's Computing History Centre
Former
Tomorrow's World presenter Peter Snow visited Haverhill this
month to take part in filming at the Centre
for Computing History. The Centre's vintage computers
were used to create an 80s style office set for Peter's documentary
about the 80s hit game Elite.
Mr
Snow said "The Centre for Computing History is an insprirational
initiative. It is a wonderful idea and an extremely valuable
resource, especially as most of the machines work! What an
impressive and quite remarkable collection, and how forward
thinking of this group of people."
Printwise
supports the work of the Centre for Computing History with
the intention of helping it to become a key attraction, in
time, for the town of Haverhill.

"Whether you are a customer of old or someone who has never used Printwise before feel free to contact us about all your print-related requirements. We can produce a wider range of items in house then ever before. We encourage clients to visit us and I'm more than happy to visit them." said Sales Executive Karen McGerty.

December 2007
One of the busiest months ever!
The end of 2007 has been one of Printwise's busiest periods ever. Although autumn is traditionally a busy time for many printers, for Printwise this year it has been exceptional.
Production Manager, Mike Boon, commented that "Printwise has produced a phenomenal amount of print since September and in many cases this has been achieved to meet extremely tight deadlines too."
The news bodes well for 2008 as Printwise wishes all its customers a very Happy Christmas. All the staff would like to thank all our customers for their custom throughout 2007.

A cleaner, sharper image with environmental benefits to boot
Further investment in Printwise's reprographics capabilities are bringing real benefits to customers. The acquisition of a new Kodak Trendsetter computer-to-plate (CTP) system in our reprograhics studio produces a cleaner, sharper image on the plate than traditional film-based sytems used to. According to Printwise's Managing Director, Paul McGerty, the new CTP system improves efficiency and the speed of work reaching the presses and has environmental benefits too in that traditional film processing with its substantial use of chemicals and inherent heavy metal waste are substanitally reduced.

New staff bring over 50 years of experience to Printwise
New production staff have joined Printwise in recent weeks, bringing a wealth of printing experience with them. Mick Lyne, Steve Barber and Dave Sizer join us as press managers and Chris Evans is now operating one of our guillotines. Mike Boon joins Jeff Birch (Printwise's longest serving employee) in a production management role and Mark Bampton boosts our delivery team.
Printwise Chairman, Terry McGerty, said "Its great to be able to bring such a range of talents and wealth of experience to the Printwise team."

Another new press for Printwise
Printwise's recent acquisition of Panda Press has enabled Printwise to upgrade its smaller press offering, thereby ensuring that the company remains competitive in the smaller offset market.
Before the merger with Panda Printwise made use of a single colour GTO machine suitable for smaller format work such as business stationery and forms but has now installed a larger 2 colour GTO. This new press ensures that the many customers who purchase smaller work can continue to receive quality print at cost effective rates from Printwise.

Printwise
purchases local rival
On
30 July 2007 Printwise purchased another local printing company,
Panda Press. Both
companies will continue to trade as before but the amalgamation
offers both companies a more prosperous future.
Printwise's
Managing Director Paul McGerty said, " The amalgamation
is a positive step for both companies, offering Panda a secure
future and Printwise room for growth. By pooling resources
both Printwise and Panda are now able to offer a wider range
of print related services. This means more options, better
value for money and superior customer service for all our
customers."

New
Printwise newsletter published
The
first 'Off the Press' newsletter of 2007 is now available.
It highlights two new developments at Printwise - the arrival
of the new Mitsubishi press (see January
2007 below) and the advent of online quoting (see February
2007 below). The newsletter explains both new arrivals
in some detail, hoping to help clients to understand the complexities
of print and to illustrate the different effects that can
be achieved with the new press's inline coating unit.

Environmental
policy swings into action
Printwise
has an ongoing commitment to minimising any negative impact
our production processes have on the environment. Clients
are increasingly asking us about our green credentials and
also want us to use recycled papers, less packaging, less
laminates etc and Printwise is happy to oblige wherever we
can.
In
particular, we work hard to reduce waste at all stages of
production by working efficiently, compacting and recycling
waste paper and cardboard, recycling plates, ink tins, toner
cartridges and other items, and by donating unwanted paper
to local schools and other groups. We also use vegetable based
inks and water based coatings on our presses, coordinate deliveries
and collections to minimise mileage, and minimise our use
of packaging.
A
new web page about our environmental credentials is currently
under construction. In the meantime, see our Community
page to find out about our links with our local community.

New
coating options favoured by clients
A
wide range of Printwise's current clients are seeing the benefit
of the inline coatings possible with the new Mitsubishi press
we installed in January and are overwhelmingly enthusiastic
about the effect they have on their printed materials. [Click
here to see January's news item.]
The
coatings are all applied inline on the new press, meaning
that incorporating them into your print work is an extremely
cost effective way of adding a bit of a 'wow' factor to sales
brochures, catalogues and folders. A coating is a much cheaper
option than laminating - as laminating is a separate process
to printing - and because it is applied inline registration
is usually perfect and even the smallest areas can be picked
out for highlighting in this way. Spot, pattern and full sheet
coatings are available and they can be gloss or matt in effect.
For
further information about coatings contact Paul
McGerty or for a quotation contact Gary
Hodder, both on 01440 707049.

Online
quoting goes live!
New
functionality has been added to the Printwise website enabling
customers old and new to obtain prices for print work 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. This puts clients in control so that
they can approach Printwise for quotations when it is convenient
for them, rather than only during office hours.
Printwise's
Managing Director Paul McGerty said, "My hope is that
our clients feel free to use the new online quoting system
as much as they like. They can do speculative quotations,
comparing costs for choosing different colour options, quantities,
sizes etc as little or as often as suits them."
To
register for online quoting return
to our homepage and click on the Instant Prices Online
logo at the top of the page, or visit our Help
page for advice on how to use the Instant Prices service.

An
impressive new press
To
welcome in the new year Printwise have made a significant
investment in a new Mitsubishi 5 colour press with coating
unit. An impressive new press for us means better quality
and improved turnarounds for our customers.

The
new press was chosen for its high speed, quality and level
of automation. It is capable of printing 16,000 sheets per
hour and is being managed by our highly experienced press
manager, Robert Seaborn. The coating unit means that print
can now be produced with high quality finishes inline. This
investment indicates a significant commitment by Printwise
in ensuring the long term production quality and value for
money that the company represents.

Printwise's new layflat binding service takes off
Orders for producing books using the unique layflat binding technique have increased considerably during 2006 so far. Several of Printwise's key cllients now regularly place orders for layflat bound publications and several more prospects are pending.
Layflat binding (also known as Otabind) produces books whose pages literally stay open for ease of reading and reference. The process is ideal for publications like music, recipe and text books where strong but flexible books are required. For further information about layflat binding contact Terry McGerty or Gary Hodder on 01440 707049 or email info@printwisegroup.com. To request a sample layflat bound book click here.

New folding and creasing machines added to Printwise's finishing 'stable'
To increase productivity and flexibility Printwise invested in new print finshing equipment in June. Added to the company's already extensive finishing 'stable', the new Heidelberg Stahl B2 folder - a modern, computer controlled machine - and the new dedicated creasing and perforating machine give the company added capacity in the finishing department.
Managing
Director Paul McGerty said, "This investment in additional
finshing equipment is part of the company's commitment to
continual improvement through the right kind of investment.
For clients having these new machines on stream means improved
turnaround times and finishing quality".
