Layflat binding is the perfect solution for the printing and publishing industries.
With layflat binding (also known as Otabind) the book's pages are collated, the spine prepared and a highly flexible but extremely strong PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive applied. A reinforced lining is wrapped over the spine and the cover is pressed into place and glued using a PUR side adhesive.
In 2005, the BPIF identified use of PUR as the best way to ensure that books don't fall apart after binding (Printing World, 3/9/05). Printwise is unique in the UK for using spray-on PUR for layflat binding.
The benefits of PUR and layflat binding are:
- Stronger books with increased flexibility
- Books that open easily and stay flat for ease of reading and reference
- A more attractive finish than other alternatives such as wire binding
- No creasing or damaging of the spine
- Cost effective compared to traditional sewn method.
